Religious Involvement
Conflict in Chechnya primarily stems from two groups, the Russian military and Chechen separatists, who are comprised mainly of Muslims. Religion within Chechnya was used mainly as a motivator as a way to unite the Chechen people and gain support against the Russians, who were comprised mainly of Orthodox Christians. This leads to jihadism and the war between Chechens and Russians was declared a holy war.
Even though the Islam religion led to some support against Russia, it eventually brought deterioration of the Chechen government. Currently three different Muslim groups are fighting for control over Chechnya and political stability of the country suffers because of this.
