Conflict between Chechens and Russians resulted in a massive loss of human life. Below is the current estimated number of human casualties.
There were reports mass killings and possible genocide by Russians as mass graves were discovered as well as the deportation of Chechens to Siberia by Stalin.
First Chechen War
- Up to 100,000 Chechen civilians killed
- 18,000 Chechen military killed
- 5,700 Russian military killed
Second Chechen War:
- Up to 200,000 Chechen civilians killed, likely by mass killings
- 17,000 Chechen military killed
- Up to 40,000 Russian military killed
