Chechnya is an autonomist region in both Asia and Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Dagestan to the east, Georgia to the southwest and Ingushetia to the west. It is 4,750 square miles in area and has an estimated population of 1.2 million. Chechnya has a rich variety of natural resources such as oil and precious metals as well as having well developed trade routes. This has caused conflict over a prolonged period of time.
