The Chechens have struggled for independence for over a century. As a result, many leaders and organizations have evolved while confronting each other as the conflict drew on. During the Chechnyan war, Russian president Aslan Maskhadov ordered strikes on civilians. Current president, Vladmir Putin has been a key player in sending troops and keeping the rebellion down. Ramzen Kadyrov is the Head of the Chechen Republic and a Former Chechen rebel. These two are pictured above on the right during peace talks (they don't actually like each other!). NATO and the UN have tried to bring peace to the region, but not enough attention has been placed to achieve any desired effect.
